U.S. Reality TV Show Workers File Overtime Claims

It’s only been weeks since the writers’ strike has pacified, and yet another one might ensue, this time from the writers behind reality shows such as American Idol and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader. The plights are the same–excessive hours, no health benefits, unpaid overtime, no meal breaks–and it’s only beginning to get worse as these undermined workers have begun filing claims against Fremantle Media with the backing of the Writer’s Guild of America.

It is kinda ironic that Idol Gives Back just aired last night (for those who didn’t see it, it’s the annual charity fundraiser of Fremantle, Fox, and 19 Entertainment) to raise money for poor people in the States and Africa, and yet its very own workers aren’t given proper welfare. How hypocritical is that? If Fox reportedly receives $200 million off American Idol, shouldn’t the people responsible for those heartwarming, tearjerker monologues last night get their well-deserved benefits first?
