Last week, I used the term disappointing to describe Pinoy Idol. This week, I feel a little sense of pride as I kept hearing the judges recycle the same word, even overuse it. And goddam right they are.
Firstly, why duets? If it was to save time, then they oughta have explained so. But it was more a waste of time rather than save. Why was singing with a partner important in an individual pasabog show? It just caused too much friction that was entirely unnecessary and unfair. The contestants were already cracking under extreme pressure and sleep deprivation and to add that babysitting duty was surely uncalled for. So it would have been nice if we were told of the intention, logical or not. Hindi naman ako manghuhula ‘no!
Second, I keep telling myself to get used to the poor editing and pathetic lines. We are running out of adjectives to label them reasonably. The show tries so hard to build-up its climax. But it became nothing short of an anticlimax. For example, Warren’s annoying spectacle sorta became the show’s thesis, but by the time it reached its pimp minutes, there were already too many kainis moments that it became utterly useless. And really, we need a petition to oust Raymond. He just cannot ad lib if humanity’s extinction, or his life na lang, depended on it.
As usual, there was a problem again with the judges’ comments. Some of them contradicted the actual results–disappointing but made it anyhow. Cases in point: Reydan(?), Katchry, Angelimae, Ian Seth, and Jenifer (the lounge singer). They could have at least shown an important clip of the deliberation in order to justify their decisions. I feel bad for Katchry because I thought she sang well. She did so much better than those who forgot their lyrics: Jerwin, Aimee, Lorelie, Vrenilyn, and Edilberto, to name a few. But obviously we cannot blame them, we’ll just pray for their eternal salvation.
Anyway, there are also some do-its and they’re largely because of the hopefuls. We liked the tandems of Loverine and Melanie and Aurora and Meryl. Individually, we liked Maricel, John Paul Dizon, Gretchen (the I’m rich but I’m sick girl), and Madriza. And mostly we liked Ogie and his bona fide conviction. But for our closing line, here’s a quote from Mr. Regine himself, “the duet was a flop.”
